Nothing Left to Lose

Most people operate from a perspective and the knowledge that they will be here tomorrow—that what they do today is going to set the stage for what is going to happen tomorrow. For some, however, they know that tomorrow will not be here so they do not care about what they unleash, because whatever they unleash is not going to affect them in any great manner.

This occurrence may be predicated by numerous factors. Certainly, a person’s age and health is a big one. If a person is old and/or dying they know their time is short so, in many cases, they just don’t care what they say or do because fuck everybody, they are on their way out. This is also the case with people who are young. As we all understand, the young believe that there will always be a tomorrow. So, whatever they do today, no matter how heinous it may be, everything will be new tomorrow—there will be new chances and new opportunities.

A good example of the age factor is, here in the U.S., we have a newly elected president. The guy is old. There is no other way to describe him but old. I mean, he is seventy-eight years old making him the oldest person ever elected to the presidency of the United States of America. He has come into office and is throwing all his power around like many a new president has done in the past. But, what he is doing is really creating a lot of short-term and long-term damage to the country. Though he is promising, maybe even believing, that what he is doing is right, people are already suffering. But, let’s look at the facts; he is old. He’s not going to be around to view the long-term affects of his declarations. What does he care?

From a personal perspective, which also goes to the case-in-point of this discussion, I think back to when one of books was about to be published by a division of Simon and Schuster. The Warrior is Silent: Martial Arts and the Spiritual Path was set to be released and they sent me the almost-final proofed copy of the book for me to do one final read and then approve or disapprove of what the editors had done. The thing was, some stupid editor had gotten into the manuscript and did this weird, (very New Age), thing of instead of referring to the colloquial, “He or Him,” as is common to the English language, throughout the book they periodically exchanged, “He and Him,” with “Her and She.” It just made the read of the manuscript bad! I contacted the Senior Editor and told, “Him,” I hated it. He said he would have it changed back to the way I had presented the manuscript and would have the editor of the book contact me. “She,” did.

The moment she got on the phone I could tell she was in a pissy mood. I asked about it and she told me she had just been let go (fired) and that this was her last day on the job and the redoing of this book was her last gig for the company. This worried me but she said she would do the job at hand. What could I do but let her promise play out? Maybe a month or so later, I got the author release of the book, she had done nothing! He and She were left interchangeable. But, what did she care? She had already been fired. She didn’t give a shit. And, for me, (the author), the book had already been set to print, so there was nothing that I could do.

This is the thing; there are some people who just have nothing left to lose. So, they don’t care what they do or whom they do it to.

On the street, you will sometimes see a criminal with that, “Nothing left to lose,” look in their eyes. I always warn people they are the worst people to go up against in a street fight because not only are they ruthless, as they have nothing to lose, they are almost impossible to defeat.

So… Most of us don’t find ourselves embracing this state of mind. …At least not yet… We care about our tomorrow and we care about how what we do today will affect someone else’s tomorrow. But, the fact of the matter is, there will come a time in each of our lives when we will fall under the domination of someone who just doesn’t give a fuck about us. Then what???

The Answer: Really, I don’t know. The thing about life is that you can’t control what you can’t control. There’s really not much you can do. The only thing you can do—the only thing you do have control over is you. You, and how you react.

So, just be prepared… Sooner or later you are going to get screwed over by someone who does not care about how what they are doing is going to do to you.

Maybe you can kick their ass, maybe you can yell and scream at them. But, most likely, there will be nothing you can do. So, you are just going to have live with their uncaring doing. Not right, but welcome to life.
