Unused Footage

For anyone who has ever made a movie they know that, at the end of the day, there is a lot of unused footage. There are takes of scenes that, for whatever reason, just didn’t make it into the final cut. In fact, there are full scenes that sometimes do not make it into the finished film. There is all this footage that no one will ever see. Only the people who took part in that scene will ever know that it even took place.

That’s the way it is in movies. Lord knows, I have hours-upon-hours of used footage lying around. I am sure I could make a couple of movies, if not more, simply by using all that unused footage.

But now, think about your life. Think about how many moments of your life have gone by that either only you remember or maybe one other person knew about. There were those times when you were full-on living what you were living but it wasn’t recorded by a camera, or anything else, so to the rest of the world it never existed.

Most people’s lives are lost like that. They live what they live, they do what they do, but those movements, all that time, it lost—known only to the mind(s) of those who were there.

Even more perplexing is the memories that become lost forever. Have you ever had one of those experiences where you were hanging out with someone and they brought up something that you two did together but that memory had completely slipped from your mind? Sure, you remember it once you were reminded, but if you had not been reminded, you may never have thought about of it again.

Those were the times when you were reminded. Think about all those life experience that you lived, completely forgot about, and there was no one there to remind you that they happen. Lost and forgotten forever.

Life is packed full of a whole lot of unused footage. Some of those times, we remember. Some we do not. Some we may even want to forget. But, all This Life, all Your Life is only packed within your own mind. As it was only lived by you, as it was only experienced by you, you are the only one that truly knows what took place. When you are gone, it will be gone, then what? Just another lost scene that didn’t make its way into a movie, a scene that no one else will ever see.
