The Answers Are Out There

As someone who has spent a good percentage of my life involved with academic research, I always find it interesting the pathway people take in acquiring their knowledge. In fact, as I was progressing towards my later twenties, I was planning on fully entering into the academic life. After I finished up my doctorate, I went into teaching for a short time. But, as anyone who has ever entered the hallowed halls of academia will tell you, it is a cutthroat game. I just didn’t like that kind of behavior, so as quickly as I entered; I left. This is not to say that I did not step back into the world of teaching as the years went on, but that was all focused on filmmaking and the arts. So, at least from my perspective, it all seemed more pure. This is not to say that I did not run into problems from time to time; which are all documented in other writings, but it all seemed to hold some great purpose as it was focused on helping people learn how to create their own art. But, before I get too far off track…

Every now and then someone points me in the direction of some discourse someone is giving about Zen Filmmaking, my movies, my books, or myself. These generally prove to be amusing, (at least to me), no matter how wrong they may be. But, whenever I see someone stating false, altered, or opinionated facts, it always causes me to re-remember the fact: The answers are all out there, you just have to look for them. But, it seems that so few people do.

As someone who has been involved with the martial arts and the Eastern understanding of philosophy for virtually my entire life, I have been constantly bombarded with statements implying that some certain person knows some super secret something that no one else can even fathom. But, it’s not true. Everything; every ounce of knowledge is out there. You just have to take the time to look for it. But, most people do not.

If you’ve ever look at the comments people make about some false thing that someone has stated—if you ever listen to discussions about some false thing someone has written or said, the one thing that is the most common take away is that people simply want to believe what someone else is saying. Why? Because it is so easy. It takes no personal research. It takes no personal work.

It’s easy to believe. It’s a lot harder to seek out and find your own true answers.

Now, this piece is not about me. I simply use myself as an example. This being said, I so often hear and read people wondering where is my truth about filmmaking and my films. Somehow they can seem to find it. But, all of it is out there! Much of it is offered for free; right here on this website! Nonetheless, I can’t tell you how many times I hear or read discussions by people wondering about my why. Do your research people!

The answers are out there! I have spelled them out! I have writing so much about the subject of my films and my filmmaking that I have left little to the imagination. Sure, there have been a few people who take my words and ideologies completely out of context, in order to make me look like an asshole, for who knows what self-motivated reason??? But, all you have to do is to take the time and have the dedication to do your own research and all your questioned will be answered. And, this is the same about everyone and everything. You just have to take the time to do your own study.

Again, this is not a piece about me. This goes to all levels of life. For example, if you are a martial artists, do you actually believe that some one person holds such an advanced level of hidden understanding that no one else could possible know it? Yet, this is what is propagated all the time. I mean, there are books, photos, and video demonstrations everywhere. Sure, someone can teach you how to do something. Sure, someone can show you a better or easier way to execute a technique. But, that is not secret knowledge. That’s just developed understanding. And, again, if you take the time to personally do the research, you can find the answers.

This is the same with all levels of spirituality. Texts and manifestos have been written for eons. People are trained in the ancient ways of meditation and living a spiritual lifestyle all the time. Is it/is anything a secret? No. The only secrets that exist are in the minds of those individuals who do not do their due diligence and seek out the teachings and truly study it for themselves.

What I am saying here is that all the answers are out there. But, if you don’t look, you can’t find them. Moreover, you must look for yourself because anything anyone else gives you is more than likely highly biased and prejudiced by their own set of opinionated standards. Thus, anything you hear about anyone or anything else you should never immediately believe because it is most probably wrong.

In closing, next time you want to know something, actually take the time to study the subject. If all you do is listen to someone else than all you are left with is what someone else believes which may be right or it may be wrong. By taking the time to do your own personal research, not only have you made yourself a better more wise individual but you will have gained true knowledge because you took the time to seek that knowledge from its true point of origin.
