Be Positive
I have this friend that’s doing this new podcast and what they do is pull out some obscure LP from some distant place, found wherever it is that they find them, and then they sit down and listen to the entire LP and afterwards discuss all of the subtitles of that album. Overall, I believe that’s a great idea, to really dive deep into the listening experience and to truly analyze the production, each note, how those notes are played, and what they are played upon.
Probably when you were young, you would buy a record or an album that you really liked and listen to it over and over again. I know I did. You would seek out all of the intricacies and subtitles of the music. And, for people for me, who are a musicians, I would try to figure out the music being played, note for note.
Side Note here… I’ve known some people who like to listen to music when they sleep. I discovered a long-long time ago, crashing at a friend’s house one night, who did that, that I simply cannot sleep when music is on because my mind is always seeking out every note and I am analyzing and playing it in my mind. This is especially the case with classical music, like my friend like to sleep to. Anyway…
Certainly, when the ability to listen to specific pieces of music in your car came along, via 8-Tracks and then Cassettes, and even Mix-Tapes, you could take that music along with you. And, if there was a specific song you really liked, you could rewind it and play it over and over again. Now, you can just do it by telling your phone or your car or your smart speaker what to play, and it will be broadcast.
I think all of that is great. But, as has certainly become the case with my life, (actually a long-long time ago), I no longer have the time to be able to sit down and to simply listen to a new, undiscovered, or forgotten piece of music and analyze it note for note. I’ve got all this life stuff going on and that fills my mind. This, though, of course, I often have music going on in my car, as I drive, and in other places when my mind is not occupied with something else that I feel is more important.
I believe there is a good lesson in life in all of this. Do you take the time to listen? Do you take the time to truly hear nature and the creations that are out there. Whether it is the rain on your roof, the wind through the trees, the waves crashing on the shore, or the music pouring out of your phone, car speakers, earbuds, or wherever, do you truly take the time to analyze the essence of that Something, note for note? If you don’t, don’t you believe you are truly missing something?
