Be Positive

Your Vision Verses Your Reality

When I speak with filmmakers, or when I am leading a class on filmmaking, I am often confronted with the reality that the budding filmmaker has a vision for what they wish to their film to become, but when they are hit over the head with the reality of the reality that their film is not going to come out anywhere near what they imagined, they are quite disappointed and often times never complete their project. As a person who has been in the filmmaking game for more than a lot of years now, then as now, I always warn, particularly actors, to not expect too much from a young or new filmmaker as there is a very good chance that the film they signed up for will never be finished.

This case study has gone on since I got into the game. Way back when, when shooting on actual film was the name of the game. Moving onto video and now digital. Many people, namely the filmmaker, has a cinematic vision, and they hope to bring that vision to life, but the reality of the reality is, unless you have a very large budget then it is very-very hard to actualize. Even with unlimited budgets, it is not easy.

Certainly, in the no to low budget indie game, this is much more commonly the truth. The truth, because there are no overreaching contracts that have been signed stating the film will be competed or else. I have known so many people who hoped to bring up a film, maybe even began to shoot some scenes for it, but never finished it due to their vision not being met and/or a whole long list of other factors.

I guess I was blessed, or maybe it was and is just my mindset, but I have always accepted the reality of the fact that you must let everything simply be what it is and not try to force your unrealistic vision upon it. For if you do, your project, whatever that project that may be, will not only never meet your expectation but may never, in fact, ever be completed.

What am I saying here? Many people have an idea about what they wish to do with their life. Many people want to create that Some Thing. But, in doing this, if you are not realistic about your own limitations, if you are not willing to accept the final result, as far as that result may be from what you had initially envisioned, than, in your life, you will most probably never complete or finalize anything.

This is just some food for thought and something that you should keep in mind.
