Polyester
I forever find it funny/interesting how each generation, within each sub-generation, finds their terms to both positively and/or negatively define what they think about what they are thinking about. Recently, the term, “Polyester,” has risen a bit to the forefront defining things that are low-rent or cheap. Okay…
Personally, I never really thought too much about polyester. The only time I can really think it ever being spoken about, at least on the world stage, was in the seminal film, Saturday Night Fever, when the DJ in the nightclub says, “It's so beautiful, man. I like your new haircut. I like that polyester look.”
I know back in the later part of the 70s, polyester became a thing in some shirts and stuff. I don’t really remember ever owing a polyester shirt back then. But, I may have???
The funny thing about all this is, (at least to me), is that just recently I’ve gotten into polyester. Polyester shirts in particular.
The thing is, I travel a lot, and so I am always seeking out new ways to travel lighter, more compact, and more Zen. I never ship suitcases through the airlines. I always just travel via my carry-on spinner and a backpack. That way it all stays with me. No need to wait for my luggage after a long flight and no need to worry about my suitcases getting lost or damaged or anything like that, which has actually happened to me in the past. You can read about some of my travel ideology on this site via the article(s): The Scott Shaw Guide to International Travel: Part One and Part Two, if you feel like it.
Anyway, and back to polyester, I recently discovered polyester shirts. You can easily find them in either solid or print colors. They are super light to pack. They fold up very small, taking up very little room compared to other shirts. And, they don’t wrinkle. They look good. They come in casual or professional stylings. Meaning, they are great for travel.
Now, I guess, polyester has become a joked about commodity. And, I get it. That’s life. That’s life evolution. That’s youth. People find things to love or to hate and, like a disease, it is passed around among the populous without any real thought. But, all of that does not make what people are saying intrinsically right. It is just something someone else said that was then repeated.
So, think about all of this as you pass through your life. What are you saying and why are you saying it? What are you repeating just because someone else said it? What trends are you following just because someone else initiated it? And mostly, is what you are doing good for you, your life, and the overall reality of the world we live in or are you just doing whatever it is you are doing because someone else said that you should?
