New York Queer Culture AKA Why Does Everything Have to Be a Something?

You know, most people who contact me are very cool. They understand what I'm about; i.e. positivity. They get what I'm doing artistically; abstract art—however that may be defined. And, anything they ask or anything they say is truly based in a positive mindset. Really, that's what I'm all about: positivity, goodness, helping people whenever I can, and all of that kind of stuff. I'm not about judgment, harshness, criticism, hurting, stealing, or any of that stuff on the negative side of the equation.

I guess that was kind of a long-winded way to say a whole lot about my very minimal truths. Sorry… Happy

Anyway, I got hit up with curious message today. And, this is why I virtually never read my DMs. I just don't want to know what people like this have to say.

This being said, a guy came at me and asked, why am I so involved with New York Queer Culture. Okay… How do I even respond to that? He also said a few other negative things on that subject—things I don't want to re-mention.

The fact is, I don't believe I actually am involved with anything.

I'm guessing, this question was based upon my support for this one New York filmmaker, Dylan Mars Greenberg and their friends and associates; including the founder of Troma, Lloyd Kaufman.

Before I get into what I think about a question like that, let me just say, Dylan first contacted me when they were fourteen years old, many years ago, as they were a fan of the Zen Film, The Roller Blade Seven. Since then, they have gone on to make all kinds of cinematic and musical creations. They’ve really created a lot of interesting stuff and really made a name for themself. Good for them!

If I, my Zen Films, Zen Filmmaking, or, The Roller Blade Seven inspired them in any way, I'm so happy to hear that. And, because they are such a self-motivated creator, I am happy to help them and their associates out in any way that I can.

Okay, that's the facts. Now, let me get to the definitions…

Why does anything have to have a definition? Maybe somebody in New York is gay. Maybe they are not. But, why would their filmmaking be defined by such a term and an ideology that could be taken in a negative manner?

Have you ever been defined as a something? Has what you do ever been defined as a something? I know a lot of times, people are defined by something; whether that is something they do, work at, or live. To others, maybe that's just how they see them. To the individual themselves, however, that may not be how they see themselves at all. Plus, whenever you put a definition onto anybody, that can be seen as an insult. …Because, maybe they don't like that definition of what you think they are, or what you believe they are doing at all. This is why I never define anybody. I simply allow them to be who they are. If they are doing something in some group, god bless ‘em! If they wish to proclaim themselves as part of some group, again, god bless ‘em! That's their choice! But, for someone to come at them and give them a definition, that they may or may not be agreed with or appreciate, that's a whole other ball game. Moreover, to come at somebody like me, who is simply supporting a creative individual, in any small way that I can, that's just all kinds of wrong.

So, think about this as you pass through your life. Think about the definitions that you assign to other people. Think about the definitions that you assigned to other groups. Think about the definitions that people proclaim you to be. Think about all of this, and then think about never defining anybody or anything, especially when you don't really know them on an individual level, and you don't really know the true anything about them.

Just let all people and all things exist in the space of who and what they are. No definition necessary. That's where the truth of freedom is found.
