You know, I was having breakfast over at this café the other day. It’s a nice little place with some enjoyable outdoor seating. …Which is always my preference. I ordered up a croque monsieur and a latte with almond milk. All good.

The lattes arrive quickly. Then, my lady and I were sitting there for what seemed to be forever. Finally, after about twenty minutes or more, I asked to go in and check and see what’s going on. Maybe they forgot about us. She was told the croque monsieur’s take a minimum of twenty minutes to create. Okay…

When the chef brought the breakfast out to our table, she went into this long discussion about why it takes so long for them to be created. She brings in the cheese from France. She makes her own bread. She has to do this and has to do that. Melt some of the cheese, then do some other stuff, then melt some more cheese. On and on… Okay, great! That’s your method. Must be a great tasting meal.

I had never had a croque monsieur at this café before, though I have had them all over the world, including in France. After her discourse, I expected some crazy level of perfection.

Sadly, I was disappointed. It certainly wasn’t bad, but for all of that effort, I just expected something more. In fact, if was on the scale of one of the lesser one I’ve ever tasted.

So, was all of that time, all of that focus, all of that whatever she put into the creation of that croque monsieur worth it? I don’t know how to measure something like that? All I can say is, me, I would go back to that café for sure. But, I would never order another croque monsieur from there.

And, this is the thing I believe we all have to think about as we pass through our life. Though we may believe we are creating something special, and it’s worth all of the time and energy that we put into it, that does not mean that anyone else would/will feel the same way.

Keep that in mind when you dive deep into doing that whatever it is you believe you do with the deepest and most profound sense of perfection. For, what you see as perfect may not be viewed that way by anyone else.
