Nobody Reads Books Anymore

Nobody reads books anymore. They listen to podcasts and stuff like that. The only time anyone reads books anymore is when they are in school and they are forced to do so.

I’m not being cynical here. I am just stating a fact. When was the last time you read a book?

Kind of an interesting thing took place here in the L.A. area recently. The Los Angeles Country Library System offered a library card with Hello Kitty images on it. The crowds went nuts. There were long lines at all of the branches, as so many people wanted the card. They were out of them almost immediately.

My lady, who is a massive fan of Hello Kitty and Friends, also wanted one. But, they were out everywhere so she gave into her fate. At least initially. Then, yesterday, she had the idea, maybe they still have some left at the Hermosa Beach library as no one goes there. So, after breakfast, I drive her to that library. And yes, they had sixty-five left. She got in line, as number thirty-nine she was good to go. Some of the other women in the line were discussing how they had gone to this library and that one, but they were all gone. Some waited for hours in line only to find out that when they finally got to the counter there were no more. But, like my lady, the sixty-five got what they desired. Good for them! I was happy for my lady, and she was ecstatic.

Okay, all well and good. But, let’s think about this… The entire reason the library system did this was to bring in new readers. The cards were free. So, it’s not like they’re making any money. But again, nobody reads books anymore. Are any of these people who stood in line to get a Hello Kitty Library Card now going to become a patron of the library and go there all the time? No. They just wanted the card. Some got the card. And, that’s that. End of story.

So, what did it prove? They only think I can think it proved is that here was an ideal example of how a commodity like a Hello Kitty Library Card, and they people that desire such things, can be completely controlled by offering them their drug of choice.

Do I want a Hello Kitty Library Card? Nope. As I don’t want one, I would have heard about them and never thought about it again. But, just like every drug addict, just like every criminal who sucks the people they know into their addiction, I too, (my life), was brought into play. So, all this shows how desire not only manipulates the life of the individual who holds the desire but all of those around them.

Moreover, all this demonstrates how if you create a Some Thing and you get people wanting it, they will go to all length just to get it. This is especially the case if it is something very limited in its distribution. It’s just a library card people!

Think about it.

Nobody reads books anymore.
