Do Your Research

Ever since RiffTrax licensed Guns of El Chupacabra and did their bit on it. Or, maybe it was because I uploaded it to YouTube and a lot more people have gotten a chance to view it, for free… I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the film. That’s great! Happy to answer! This is especially the case when I get new and unique questions unlike the ones I have been asked and answered a hundred of times before.

I was talking to this guy the other day about the film. He told me that he had read that this one reviewer was detailing a scene we shot a Union Station. The guy I was speaking with wanted to know more about that scene. Apparently, from what I was told, the reviewer was trying to throw some shade on me while throwing some props to DGJ. That’s fine! And, that great for Don! He deserves ‘em!

The thing about the whole thing, that I thought was funny, was that the reviewer was apparently sending praise to Don for shooting this one segment in the (then) newer section of Union Station. I mean we created that film back in ’97.

The thing was/is, Don didn’t shoot that scene nor was it his idea. It was mine.

As the story goes, we were shooting in the older section of Union Station one night and I suggested we go to that newer section as they had shot scenes for movies like Total Recall there, among others. It looked a bit high-tech.

The things was, when Don and I worked together, there was never a him or a me. We worked as a single-minded team. If he had an idea, we ran with it. If I did, the same.

The thing was, Don didn’t actually shoot that scene. He had lost all the cartilage in his one hip from the leukemia medicine he was taking and it was very painful. Walking had become a chore. He references this via his character in The Rock n’ Roll Cops. Our camera guy, Jonathan Quade, and I shot the scene of the agents running through the station after this one character that was transforming into a chupacabra or a ???

Sure, Don took D.P. credit in the film. And, that’s fine. He was a creative force. Plus, he could load the various film cameras, something I could not do. But, he didn’t shoot the scene.

FYI: For those of you who may not know this, each film camera loads very differently. It is truly an art form to know how to load the vast array of cameras that are/were out there. Plus, you had to do this sight unseen in a room with absolutely no light or simply by feeling your way around in a changing bad.  So, it is a very developed craft. Not like today.

Anyway and in any case, the reason I discuss this fact about the film is that so many people say so many things about movies yet they have no idea in how they were created or what actually took place. Like I’ve said a million times before, “What is a film critic? With very few exceptions, a film critic is someone who doesn’t possess the talent or the dedication to actually get out there and make a film.” I would love for one of these people to go out there and make a film and let me tear it apart. Happy

But, more than that, I believe this is something that everybody needs to take into consideration. You really need to do your research! You really need to do your homework. “The truth is out there.” But, you have to seek it out.

I mean, I get it… Everyone hides behind their screennames, so who cares if they get it wrong? But, each person should care. They should go to the source and study the true facts before they make any kind of a statement about anything. And certainly, this is not just about my films. I’m just using them as an example. But, if you get it wrong, you get it wrong. Simple as that. And, no matter what name or whatever you hide behind, if you get I wrong, what does that say about you? It says you got it wrong. And, that’s not right. It is putting incorrect and wrong information out there into the cosmos. You should care about that.

I’m sure an individual like that reviewer would not read a blog like this. But, for those of you who do, keep this ideology in mind. Because there is that whole reality out there, that you may see, hear, or even interact with, but if you have not lived what you are describing, and you do not go to the source to get the true facts, then all you are spouting is, at best, speculation but most probably lies.
