Be Positive
What is art? I believe that art for most people means many different things. The one thing that art obviously means is its ability to transcend the realms of the obvious and move towards that deeper understand that is lodged only within in the mind of the artist.
Okay, but what does all of that mean?
I believe that since time immemorial, art has been seen, viewed, listened to, or whatever, and then it was judged. Maybe it was liked, maybe it wasn’t. But, at its essence, isn’t that the pure representation of art? To be interpreted by the viewer, the listener, the whatever-er?
When the realms of the more abstract began to be embraced within the arts, there came a complete schism, and the basis of the question, what is or is not art? But, here again, at its root, art was and is about two things. One, what the creator envisioned. And two, what the consumer consumed; liking it or not.
But, simply because someone does not like or understand the art of an artist—simple because they do not understand the motivations for the art of the artist, does that take away the art? My answer is, no. Art is created because a person has the vision and the motivation and that whatever else to actually get out there, do what it takes, and get that art created; by whatever medium they may choose. How about you? Do you create art?
For me, my entire life has been based in creating art; via the various methods I have undertaken. Some of the things I have created have been accepted, some have not. And, that’s AOK with me. For, at least in my mind, as long as the new creations are being created that is a good thing. That is creativity. That is pushing the envelope of whatever form of art that is embraced forward. I believe this is something that is easily understood by the artist. And, this is why the artist always appreciates the art created by someone else. Maybe they do or do not particularly like a particular piece of art, but that does not take away the truth of its creation. Again, are you an artist? Do you create art? If you are, then you understand what I am speaking about.
All of this is all just something for you to keep in mind. Constantly ask yourself, is what you are doing creating art? If it is, good for you! If not, that’s okay too. Not everyone is an artist. But, in the truth of the truth of art, if someone is doing what they are doing, based in the mindset of art, you should at least be enlightened enough to understand their effort and appreciate that though you may not like what they are creating, what they are doing is, at least, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression forward. And, isn’t that a good thing?
