Does Anyon Care About the Story of Your Life?
Kind of interesting, I guess??? …In that not so interesting sort of way. At least, not so interesting from the perspective of someone who doesn't really care.
And, I guess that's the premise of this piece… Does anybody really care? Does anybody really care about you? Particularly, do people care about you that don't really know you? Everyone seems to think that people care. But, do they?
I was sitting back having a little bit of breakfast this morning at this outdoor cafe. I was enjoying my bagel/breakfast sandwich. It was made with some tasty avocado. I thought it was pretty interesting. I also was sipping on a really nice cup of coffee. It was made really well. You know how it goes, some coffee is really good, while most isn't. But, that's just the reality of life. But, when you get that good cup of coffee, you really take notice.
Anyway, as I was sitting there… There were two women: one young, one older. The one on the older side of the picture was one of those very talkative individuals. Even though she was speaking in Japanese, she went on and on and on and on. …You know, one of those conversations that you don't really want to listen to but because it is broadcast right in your ear you have no choice…
What did she go on and on about? I don't know? Who really cares? It was the story of her life. All the places she had visited. The places she hoped to go. And, the places she went for work. She really felt self-important. But, I could tell that the younger woman could really care less about anything that she was saying. She was just forced to listen to her, for whatever reason???
Think about your own life. Think about the people you know. Think about the people you've told your life story to. How much do they really care about what you have to say?
Now, I get it, there's close family members. There's the people you love. There's close friends who maybe care just a little bit. But, how much are they simply pretending to care about what you have to say? How much are they really listening to you? How much is it affecting any their life in any real and true sort of way? Or, are they just listening to be polite?
Maybe even the bigger question is, if they are truly listening to you and caring about what you have to say, what does that say about their own life and the importance of what they are living and what they are doing? For, if they were doing anything of any consequence, would they care about your life story being told at all?
Throughout my life, I've really come to understand how most people believe they really have a story to tell. But, do they?
I remember when my writing career was first taking off, and people would ask me what I did for a living. I would explain that I was an author. I cannot tell you how many times, and how many people, came at me with the idea that they wanted their life story written down. They believed that they really had a story worth listening to. And, maybe they did? I don't know? I didn't want to listen to it.
The thing was, due to my avocation, they all wanted me to write their memoir for them. Now, as I've mentioned in the past, I have ghostwritten a couple of books. But, let me be very clear about this, I was paid a lot of money. If I wasn't, I would never even have contemplated undertaking such a task. It seems, all of the previous aforementioned people, however, wanted me to do it for free or on the cheap. Forget about it!
The thing is, everybody/we all believe that we have a story to tell. And, in fact, we do. The life we lived is the life we lived. And, perhaps to some, it is worth listening to and/or reading about. But, for example, in listening to the woman who told her story today, most of what she said nobody would or could care less about. Yet, she believed she had a story to tell.
Here's the thing, we all live our life. That's just a fact. Some of our life may be very interesting. Some of our life may be very boring. Some of our life may be very exciting. Some of our life may be very mundane. But, no matter what we live, it is only us who has truly lived it. Thus, it is only us who can truly understand it. Though we may try to tell the story of our life to other people, they can never fully embrace our understanding of our reality. Why? Because our reality is only our reality. What we lived, and what we felt while living what we lived, is only truly known to us. That's a fact. Remember that fact. Particularly, Remember that fact? When you're telling the story of your life to a person. A person, that probably doesn't even want to listen to you.
