When a Rainbow is Gone

I don’t know about where you live, but don’t you love it when you see a rainbow? At least here in L.A., they are fairly few and far between. So, when one pops up in the sky, it’s just so enthralling. The problem is, however, rainbows don’t last forever. They’re here and then they’re gone. I always find that sad. You’re looking at it, loving it, studying it, hoping it will last forever, but then it fades away.

Life is a lot like that, don’t you think? I mean, so much of the good stuff is here and then it’s gone. Sometimes that good stuff lasts a while. Other times, it’s only here just for a moment. Here, and then it’s gone.

The thing about life is, we all want what we love to last forever. We want it to stay around. But, through time, technology, karma, or simply human innovation and/or destruction, it will be here and then it will be gone.

You know, I’ve had this TV system that I’ve loved for a lot of years. When it came around, well over ten years ago now, it was just so good. So good, compared to what came before. Just the way it was designed and set up and functioned and… It just worked. Thousands of stations, all easy to track and to find, On Demand, you name it…

Every now and then, I would have some problems with the system. But, I would call up and the tech on that far off distant shore would set it right again.

Last night, again, I had a problem. “God damn it!” It’s always frustrating to deal with something you don’t feel like dealing with when you are all chilled and laid back.

We call ‘em up. They run through some tests. Have us do a few things. No go. They have to send us a new box. It’ll be here in a day or two. Until then… Well…

The tech continues, “Oh, by the way, we are changing our system. The old system is being phased out”  Then comes the spiel. “You will pay less. You will say over a thousand dollars in the first years, and…”

If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would think that they probably set up the whole problem with my system to get our attention and make us make the call. And, maybe that is true. We took the bait. We are changing with the change.

So, I don’t know what is/what will come next??? Got to wait a day or so to get the new system setup via the email and the???

But, you know, it’s just sad to see things go. Things that you loved, but they are no more.

Just like the beauty of that rainbow, here and then it is gone.

Just like the lyric in that great song from that fictional band of the 1960s, Max Frost and Troopers, “
Nothing Can Change the Shape of Things to Come.”
