When They’re Not Who They Say They Are

Have you ever met somebody who says that they are one thing, pretends to be a certain person, but then you find out that they are not at all who or what they claim to be? I’m pretty sure that we’ve all met people like that in our life. And, sometimes it’s not a good thing.

I guess there’s a million reasons for this behavior. But, a lot of people lie about who they truly are. Most of the time, it’s either to hide something they don’t want the world to know about them or it’s to pretend to be something that they are not. I guess that’s probably the big one... A person pretending to be something that they are not.

All this being said, it’s kind of one of those sad realizations, don’t you think? Sad, when you believed that they were something and then you find out that they were nothing of the sort.

I think to this one girl who I knew of. She used to do these great commentaries on Japan. She spent some time there, (I guess), and she presented a lot of very interesting information, particularly for people who have never traveled to Japan. For someone like me, someone who has spent years of my life returning to Japan, I found her commentaries interesting. I mean, it is always interesting to see somebody put a different take on things that you know very—very well.

This was all fine and good. She faded from my memory and my feed. Then, her content started to pop back up into my feed. It was all basically old stuff. Rehashed moments of the same. Basically, I guess she spent her however long in Japan, came back to the States, and all she was left with for content was to talk about a time in the past.

That’s not to say that her information wasn’t still interesting if you hadn’t seen it before. But, it was one of those, “I’ve seen it all before,” sort of things.

Okay, step forward a little bit… You come to believe that you think you know who and what a person is. Then, this one friend of mine, kind of popped my bubble, I guess you could say. He said, “Dude, she does “Only fans.” “Okay,” I say. Then, he pops me over to her page, and there she is doing all this hardcore sex stuff. And, I do mean hardcore.

Illusion shattered.

Personally, I’m just not into porn. I never have been.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against people that want to do that sort of stuff. I don’t have anything against people who want to share their sex acts online; if that’s who and what they are. I mean, hell, I’ve worked with tons of people who made their living in the adult industry, and they were some of the nicest people I ever knew. I wouldn’t do what they did. But hey, to each their own.

I think the only thing that surprised me about this one young lady is that there she was presenting herself as this very interesting, very knowledgeable, person sharing essential and important information to the world, but it turns out, that she was something very, very different.

Now, of course, this is just one example. I mean, I imagine we’ve all met people that. People that keep who they truly are hidden behind the curtain. I suppose I could go into all kinds of rationale and psychological profiling about why people behave in this manner. But, I imagine for each individual it’s a very individualized thing. My only truth, my only reality, is that I find this style of behavior very deceptive. If you cannot be wholly and truly who you are to every person, what does that say about what you are actually doing?

Think about your own life. How truthful are you? I mean, truly dig deep. How much truth do you put out there, not only about the good but the bad that is there inside of you and what you have done and what you now do? How much of you is based in truth?

How have you lied to others about the truth of you? How many people have you lied to?

And, to take this just a bit deeper, think about a time you did lie about yourself or the truth of your truth. How did that lie affect your relationship(s) farther down the line?

Ultimately, you can lie all you want. But, a lie never makes anything the truth. You can pretend to be something that you are, keep the dark portions of your life and your mind hidden, but that doesn’t change the reality of what’s there deep inside of you. Mostly, if you cannot broadcast the truth about who and what you truly are to everyone—to the world, than everything you say, and everything you do becomes a lie. A lie that will someday be revealed.
