Is There Anything Right With You Wrong?
Don’t you hate it when a business really screws you over? You pay them your money, they do what they do, or they don’t do anything, and you are left totally cheated or totally fucked over. Has that ever happened to you? I know it has happened to me.
You know how it goes when every now and then some celebrity gets screwed over or disrespected by a business, or something like that, and they go all ballistic on the socials. Their fans go nuts on that business. Then, that business is always so sorry and apologetic and stuff. But, that’s only because they got their face rubbed in the mud and they got hit with a tidal wave of repercussions. Don’t you wish when some something negative happens to you, via the hands of someone else, that you could get that kind of response? I know I do.
I had a kind of curious/annoying experience the other day. You may remember, I might have mentioned it, that six months back or so I was set to go to Rome. The AM I was supposed to leave, the pilots at Lufthansa went on strike, and my flight was cancelled. I had already paid for my hotel room at River Place Hotel, and everything, but I could not get there on time. I contacted the hotel, explaining the situation—it was not my fault, but they refused a refund. What assholes! That was two thousand dollars I pre-paid them. And, I am sure, they obviously rebooked the room to someone else, making double the money.
I went through the whole thing of trying to get help from the credit card company and everything, but they did zero. Basically, it was just a major, “Fuck you,” or better put, “Fuck me,” on all levels.
I have to head back to Rome and I had an idea. Why don’t I contact the hotel, hoping they would do the right thing. I gave them all the info, re-explained my situation, and asked, “Why don’t you book me a room as I already paid you for it?”
The next day, I get a total fuck you email. Their policy this, their policy that, and if I ever write another negative review, as they take that kind of stuff really seriously, look out, they will take legal action against me. What! Legal action for telling the truth on Yelp and TripAdvisor, explaining that this hotel may cheat you.
Anyway… Don’t you always hope that people will take the high road? That they will do the right thing. If they, a business or a person, does some wrong to you that they will try to make it right? What happened to the old saying, “The customer is always right.”
As I jokingly told my lady, after this occurred, now they know the dates that I’m going to be there. We’ll be riding along in a taxi and motorcycles will pull up on both side and they’ll pull out machine guns and we’ll be all blasted to hell like in the movies.
I doubt that’s going to happen. I least I hope it doesn’t happen. But, all this goes to the point of the point, why can’t people do the right thing? If something goes wrong, if they do something whether intentionally or not, why can’t they do the right thing and make it right?
How are you in these situations? …When you do something that hurts someone. …If you are involved in a situation where someone may be hurt by you only thinking about the bottom line, or yourself, do you care enough to care to make it right for them? Or, do you only think about yourself and how you can make double the money?
Anyway… It would be great if I had the social media presence to bounce back at that hotel and if not get my two grand back at least get a room. But, I’m just me. No one special. So??? What power(s) do I have?
But, in all this being said, don’t you agree, right is always right? Doing the right thing is always doing the right thing. And, only thinking about yourself, in any situation, all that does is create a world of hurt.
Maybe karma will get that hotel manager or that hotel itself someday. Who knows? But, how will that help me? All I know is that I got cheated, through no fault of my own, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Somehow, that just seems so wrong.
Any thoughts?
