Be Positive
Kind of funny, I suppose… For some strange reason today, I can't really tell you why, I decided to look at my DM's on IG. This is something that I virtually never do. Why? I really don't have an answer. I just don't do it.
Anyway, I noticed that there was this one DM, and I read it over. It was telling me that somebody, (of very important status), wanted to speak with me. I thought, okay, I'll definitely respond to that DM. Let me think about my answer a little bit, because I want to say a few of the right words to the sender, and then I'll hit them up tomorrow. Tomorrow being today.
Today, I get all my thoughts in order, and I'm ready to hit ‘em up. I read over the DM again, and I realized, it was written twenty-seven weeks ago. I laughed to myself. All the thought I'd put into the message, and it all meant nothing. You know, twenty-seven weeks, it's just too late to reply. So, I let it go. Sorry to the sender!
In another instance, I noticed that somebody had hit me up telling me that I was an inspiration to them in the world of filmmaking. And, they hoped I would keep making films forever. Very nice thought. Thanks! When did they write that? Two years ago.
It's kind of like when people ask me for my telephone number these day… I just don't do that anymore. As I explain to them, I don't answer my phone. I don't listen to my voicemails. And, I don't respond to texts. I've been like this for a very long time now. Thus, only a few of my very close people have my phone number.
I always detail to the people that ask, it's just the method to keep you from getting mad at me, due to all of the reasons I have just explained.
I remember back in the day, when I used to give out my phone number to people that would ask, and then I would never respond, they'd get all pissed off at me. They'd take it all personal. So, to just keep that melodrama from happening, now, the only people that have it are the people I'm going to actually answer the phone for, listen to the voicemail from, or respond to the text. So, if you have my number, you should feel pretty lucky.
Life in the world of modern communications. I’m mean, the truth be told, I really have to play around to even figure out how to read my DMs on IG as I so rarely even try. My fault.
I’ve been around a long time. The telephone used to the be the main method of distant communication. If you were home, you would answer. Not home, they would have to try later.
I remember the reason I finally bought an answering machine, you know one of those very old-school analogue one’s with tape. It was because I had given one of my guitars to Valdez Guitars on Sunset, way back in the way back when. They were the place to have all of your refinishing and customizing work done back in the day. Anyway, I get a phone call one afternoon, and they were really incensed that they'd been trying to get in touch with me for like two weeks as my guitar had been completed.
It was this really cool Gibson SG that I had back in the day. Back then, I predominately only played SGs. I had brought it in for a refinish, and they were such great craftsman that they actually put a veneer on the top before they did the refin. Plus, they did a great job on the frets and with installing these new DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups that had just hit the market. I wanted them installed with a coil splitter switch and a phase switch. That’s the kind of stuff we used to have done back in the day… Anyway, they really did a great job. But, they'd apparently been trying to get in touch with me forever. Thus, they wanted to get paid. I immediately drove up from Manhattan Beach, where I was living at the time, through all of the L.A. afternoon traffic.
Anyway, that’s just a memory from the old school and the way communication used to be communicated. Then, came pagers, definitely had one of those. Then came voicemails on the pagers. Had one of those, as well. That was the main Hollywood communication accessory back in the day. Then cell phones hit the world, and everything changed. Particularly, when the smartphone was invented.
Just a walk down memory lane. Sorry!
Oh wait, I skipped the FAX machine. Never mind…
So here we are, in this modern age, there’s all kinds of different ways to communicate with one another. Though I post on Instagram, (sometimes), Facebook, TikTok, X (never). I just never have really used them as a means of communication. So, will I start to look at my DM's a little bit more after this experience? I don't know. Maybe? But, probably not. ![]()
