Before the MTV Generation
Here we are, 2026. 2026, yet some of us have lived a long life before this reality. Lived by some. Not known by most. Forgotten by many.
Anyway, and in any case, something came across my mind. A couple of songs, from the way back in the way back when.
With most of my TV watching experience over for the evening, I decided to pop over to YouTube, and see what I could see. It was actually kind of hard to find a couple of them. Great music, yet long forgotten. Played, Recorded, Broadcast, before the MTV generation truly took hold and then fell apart. Well, maybe…
The first song I pulled up was by the guitar virtuoso, Michael Shchenker. First well-known from playing for the band, UFO. UFO, long before music videos ever existed. Then, he went solo, joined up with Robin McAuley and created, the McAuley Schenker Group. They did this great song, “Save Yourself.”
Me, I decided I had to hear that song again after so many years. No music video surrounding it. Though, there were a few live performances of it. But somehow, they all missed the true essence of the studio release. Me, I just let the song play on with the photo of the album cover, while his guitar licks rang on, and the vocalist did what he had done. Great song!
Next song up, “I Don't Believe in Love,” by the band, Queensrÿche. Yes, there was a music video created around that song. For me, back then, and even into this now, that video never captured the song. Great song though. So worth the listen!
A few years back, before the pandemic, Queensrÿche actually played a club not too far from where I live on Pacific Coast Highway. I always thought that was so strange. Once, an arena rock band. Then BAM, now/then they were playing a nightclub in Hermosa Beach. I don't know, what does that all mean?
Finally, I had to hear the song by the band D-A-D. A song that I listened to on CD a million times, way back in the way back when, “Sleeping My Day Away.” Great song. This led me to a few other songs off of that album. All of them great pieces of music.
I still remember back in the day, how my one friend who was a bass player, saw the video for that song and realized that their bass player used a bass with only two strings. He exclaimed, “That's all you really need!” Just one of those really vivid memories, of a time, in a time way gone past. A two-string bass.
YouTube took me a little bit deeper into this band. Next up, it showed me some of the other music videos made off of that album’s release. All of them really good songs. Time, from a time gone past.
If I were to guess, you probably don't know that band. If I were to refer to the others, you probably don't know any of the bands I just now mentioned either. And, that's the reality of life. Things, people, music, it comes and then it goes. Then, it's Gone.
It looks like the band D-A-D is still together. Up popped a few more modern musical performances of the band. One, from just a couple of years ago.
The problem is, the original members, they all got old. Somehow, there's just something missing in the youthful lyrics and vibes of their music with old people singing them. Youth, that is what motivated that moment in time. I mean, a sixty-something year old man singing, “Sleeping My Day Away,” compared to a twenty-something year old, it has way different implications. ![]()
But, the bass player still plays his two-string bass. Good for him!
And, that's the thing about life. We all live what we live. At moments in our life, certain things come to define those moments. There are certain things we really love about that/those moments. We love them. Maybe some other people love them, as well. But, then that moment is gone. First, the people who created that whatever get old, then they die. Then what? All that was lived, all that was felt is gone.
This is one thing you really need to remember as you pass through your life. You can live it as long as you can live it. And, God bless you, hopefully you will live it for a long time. But, no matter how much you live it, no matter how long you live it, sooner or later, it will be gone. Then, you will be gone. Then what?? What will anything you cared about mean to anyone else?
