Ghost Writer

Do you ever ponder who actually writes the books that you read? I mean, do you immediately assume that simply because there is a name of an author on the title page, that is who wrote the book? I imagine for most people, they do. They see a name, they buy the book, and they believe that is who wrote it. In some cases that is true. But, that is not always the case.

Let me tell you a little bit about some stuff… …Just for those of you who care. I, me personally, I have been the ghost writer on a few books. Now, I’m not going to drop names, because that would not be cool. Just let it be said that there are a few books out there that were not authored by whom the cover page claims. And, this is nothing new. It has been going on forever.

Here’s a fact, ever since I first burst onto the writing scene, so many people have come to me and asked me to write a book for them. In fact, this situation occurred just the other day.

But, here is one big cold hard fact, no one read books anymore. At least not the way they once did. The world of traditional publishing has been dissolving in front of our eyes. Everyone is lost in social media and all the inter-web whatever. The publishing game has crashed. Meaning, it is almost impossible to get a publishing deal anymore if you are not an established author. Even me, there was a time when at one point I got offered two book deals in one day. No more. Not that I wish that it wasn’t the way it used to be.

Ever since the way back in the way back when, I have met so many people that believe they have a story that should be told. But… Everyone has a tale to tell. What makes yours so special?

There’s another side to all of this, there are those who get a book deal and entice others to write their pages for them. There was this one playa’ in the martial arts game; basically, a magazine editor, who got everyone to write his books for him. I spoke about him and his doings in the blog a million years ago. You may remember? Like, for example, he would have me write extended chapters for him. He would then put my writings and other writer’s works in a book and take credit as the author. That was just wrong! Of course, he didn’t pay anyone a dime. I believe this was all based in the fact that the man never attended a university. For there, you would learn that the proper method to do something like that is to give chapter credit to the actual author and then take editor credit for the book. He didn’t do that. We eventually ended our normally very cordial relationship in a blow up. Oh well…

The other thing about ghost writing is, I’m not cheap! I charge a lot! People never even think about that. Like the person who contacted me recently, they think their book idea is oh so important, someone like me should do the job for nothing or next to nothing, believing that they and/or me will get paid on the back end. That does not happen. Not anymore.

Everyone is under this massive illusion that all authors get paid big bucks for writing a book. Believe me, as someone who has walked down this road a long-long time, unless it’s a best seller, (and even then) for the most part, forget about it. Publishing companies have become so self-serving it is not even funny. The stories I could, (and probably have), told you.

Ultimately, what I am saying here is, if you have a story you believe should be told, tell it. If you have a book that should be written, write it. I mean, it is nearly impossibly to get a publishing deal with a major publishing company anymore, so forget about that. But, there as so many self-publishing options out there in this current world, you can get your book published. Just don’t be surprised when it doesn’t sell many copies. But, you can get it out there. And, perhaps more importantly, if you don’t write it yourself, if you don’t truly create it yourself, than was it ever your story or your truth to begin with?
