Seeking Attention

Why is the sage silent? Because they are content within themselves and they do not wish to project their image to the outside world so that their peace will not be invaded by people and the forces separate from themselves.

We have entered an age where anyone can become famous. They can pretty much say anything and do anything and gain notoriety for it. Gone is the era where someone had to study and to learn to be deemed competent before they embarked or were provided with a pathway to fame. Now, all you need is your phone.

This is not bad or good. Like all points in history, this is just the way it is. And, like in all points in history, with whatever it was that was taking place, good things come from it as do bad things.

As we find ourselves where we find ourselves, many no longer contemplate the reasoning behind their desire for fame. Nor do the people who, “Follow,” those people seek it out.

But, what is the root cause of anyone seeking out this fame—however that fame may be defined? The answer to that question is simple. They desire acceptance and admiration from the outside. They are not whole and complete enough, within themselves, to be silent like the sage. They must find their worth provided by the veneration of others.

People who desire and pursue this level of acceptance are generally not aware or self-investigative enough to understand why they seek what they seek. They simply go after it. Then, if they find that acceptance out there, provided by the ethos, they become addicted to the veneration. Thus, they desire it more and more.

In this time, in this age some people have also discovered how to make a living via this abstract method of fame. Again, this is not bad or good, it is simply a sign of the times.

But, from this, the individual who purse this, further removes themselves from understanding the simple and true realities of life. Instead, they become defined by the fame based in whatever it is that they do. But, as has been clearly shown in this age and time, this world can also turn on that person; attack and destroy these purveyors of abstract notoriety.

What does this leave us with?

That is a complicated question, and a complicated answer as we have now become seemingly defined by the privileges of this age and time. But, the main thing to keep in mind is that the individual who walks this path is more than likely not doing it from a position of purity or mindfulness. They are doing it from a position of egotism; wanting to presenting themselves to the world, believing that they have something to present to the world, and, thus, they should become noteworthy because of it. That is egotism, not holiness.

Where does that leave you? Where does that leave me? Where this leaves us is that we must be mindful of who is doing what and why. The sage is silent. The person seeking notoriety is not. Thus, know who you are listening to. Understanding that what they are saying is not coming from a position of purity, but a position of seeking fame.

Know who you are listening to. Know who is filling your mind with whatever they are filling your mind with. Ask yourself, “Why are you watching and listening to them?” “Why do you believe what they say or champion what they do?”

The sage is silent. Are you? Are the people you are listening to? Is they are not silent, what does that tell you about them and why they are doing what they are doing?
