Rent Goes Up

Funny, in that not so funny sort of way… Kind of interesting/curious, I guess… But, the fact of life is, rent goes up.

You know how it is in your various feeds, on the various social networks, sometimes weird things just pop up. Apparently, for no reason. I’m sure the algorithm of the Great Beyond, and all of that sort of metaphysical/mystical interweb stuff has something to do with it. But, sometimes it’s just weird.

Anyway, for some strange reason, an apartment that is for rent in Redondo Beach, California, came up in my feed yesterday. The strange thing about it was, it’s the apartment that I used to live in. Very, very, very strange!

When it popped up, it caught my eye. I had to look at it. Obviously… Obvious, for obvious reasons. After looking it over, I looked at the price, $8,600.00 per month. Are you fucking kidding me?

To go back in time a little bit, and to tell the story… I lived in this apartment in Redondo Beach, right on the water, for several years back in the late 1980s into the early 1990s. The apartment looked out across Hermosa Beach. It was really fun. I really loved it there. Had a lot of great experiences there.

Back then, however, I was paying, $1,175.00 a month. That was a little bit high for rent back in the day. But, it was right on the water. So…

When my lady and I first got together, we lived there together for a while. But, she always wanted a bigger space, which is what eventually caused us to move.

So, the point to all this being, it’s been a little over thirty something years, or so, since I moved out of that apartment. I get it, thirty years plus is a long time. But, how does anybody afford $8,600.00 a month in rent for an apartment?

Kind of just a side note here... One of the things that I’ve been noticing that has been taking place around the greater L.A. area for a number of years now is that they are building these really nice apartment buildings. The thing is, they build them in kind of the funky parts of the city. What causes them to do this? I have no idea. There’s no real industry anywhere near them. So, my question always is, who lives there?

The other thing about this situation is, every now and then, when we’re driving along, and notice one of these new structures going up, my lady or I will look up what they’re charging for rent, just out of curiosity. And, the rent is always super high like $5,000.00 a month or more. I mean really, in this world, who can afford to pay rent that high? And, why would you pay it to live in a crappy part of the city where you can’t even take a walk a night without getting jacked?

So I don’t know??? This all goes to the big question of life. Really, what does it mean? What does anything mean? And, who can really know??? All I do know is, $8,600.00 a month for rent—for an apartment that I paid a little over $1,000.00 a month to live in… Damn, rent does go up.
